# Mainnet

The Avalanche Mainnet denotes the principal network of the Avalanche blockchain, where actual transactions and the execution of smart contracts take place. It represents the complete, production-ready version of the blockchain, enabling users to engage with the network and conduct transactions involving real-world assets

Functioning as a "network of networks," the Avalanche Mainnet encompasses the [Primary Network](https://docs.avax.network/learn/avalanche/avalanche-platform), which consists of the X, P, and C-Chain, as well as all operational Subnets. These Subnets are distinct blockchain sub-networks designed for particular application scenarios. They can adopt unique consensus mechanisms, establish their own token economies, and operate on various [virtual machines](https://docs.avax.network/learn/avalanche/virtual-machines), catering to specific needs and functionalities
